Bonding of EPDM to other materials

 
EPDM has no polar groups or groups with high electron density and therefore can be difficult to bond to metals or other substrates. To overcome this problem, LANXESS has developed MAH-grafted EPDM grades. These Buna® EP XT grades have maleic anhydride groups grafted to the polymer backbone. When blended into an EPDM compound at low levels (e.g., 10 phr), the XT grades provide improved adhesion to metals, minerals, and polymers such as nylon and polyester.
